Domain Name Selection and Registration
A web site (which also contains pages) is like a book, on a computer that is part of the internet structure, somewhere in the world.
A domain name is the name of that web site, and also, because the registration process requires a location to be specified (the DNS information, a set of numbers similar to a telephone number), that indicates the computer on which the web site is to be found.
Registration of a domain name does not confer "ownership"; it is a license to use a domain name, for a specified period of time and under certain terms and conditions.
A Domain Name is composed of 3 parts:

Domain Type

Domain Country

A Domain Name is often shown as being composed of 2 parts when a Domain Space is considered to be a combination of the Domain Type and the Domain Country ie.

Identity Names:
There can only be one identity name for any particular domain space, but the same identity name can be used in a different domain space.
Considering the individual name "impavid" for example, there is only one "impavid.com" domain name, but there can also be an "impavid.com.au", and an "impavid.net" (all licensed by Impavid Pty Ltd).
Select an appropriate, available domain space.
Decide which domain type would best suit your purpose eg. .com or .org, and then whether it is important to be recognized as being Australian or not eg. .com.au or just .com.
More detailed information about the different domain spaces to choose from may be found here.

Select a domain name registrar and enter the required details.
A new domain name may be registered with, or an existing domain name may be transferred to, ImpavidNet. Registration terms and conditions may be viewed
here.
Australian domains may be transferred free, with no payment expected until the domain is due for renewal. Global domains require a minimum 1 year renewal fee, to be transferred, but this adds 1 year to the expiry date.
The maximum registration period for an Australian domain is 2 years. The maximum registration period for a global domain is 10 years.
A new domain name may be registered with ImpavidNet here.
The prices to register new domains, and renew existing domains, are the same and are shown below. All prices are AUD and include GST.

The DNS information.
The DNS information comes from the web hosting provider, and if known, can be entered during the registration process. If not known at registration time this information can be entered later.
